“The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee will be the benchmark for mid-size SUVs with a new level of on-road driving dynamics and fuel economy, while at the same time improving the 4×4 capability that customers expect from Jeep,” said Paul Outhwaite, Chief Operation Officer of United Motors Company. “Jeep Cherokee boasts a new design, a nine-speed automatic transmission and two advanced engines, class-leading capability from three innovative 4×4 systems, more than 70 safety features, and a host of new technology features.”

The new Jeep Cherokee is also the first mid-size SUV to feature rear axle disconnect, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4×4 capability isn’t needed and ensuring improved fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnects seamlessly, switching between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver.
New Exterior and Interior Design
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee mid-size SUV debuts a new exterior designed for the future with a global appeal. Jeep designers were inspired to create a vehicle that moves Jeep into the next era with a shape that is efficient without losing Jeep DNA and design heritage. The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a vehicle that not only looks efficient and capable, but is efficient and capable – on-road, off-road and in all weather conditions. Fluid, sleek exterior lines highlight the efficient, wind-splitting upper body of the all-new Cherokee. The rugged, protective lower body conveys the legendary capability that is characteristic of every Jeep.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee has a powerful stance, an aggressive wheel-to-body proportion and a commanding road presence. The aggressive approach and departure angles contribute to the best-in-class capability. A key element in the front of the new Jeep Cherokee is the ‘waterfall’ hood with the iconic peaked, seven-slotted grille which includes a crisp, horizontal snap – a feature found in many classic Jeep vehicles. The hood is clearly defined and separated from the front fenders in a modern interpretation of the brand’s design heritage. Advanced LED lighting technology enhances the unique proportions of the front boasting daytime running lamps (DRL) and available Xenon headlights.
Forward lighting features a unique daytime running lamp (DRL) shape that plays a dominant role in the fresh front-end proportion, giving the impression of a slim headlamp. Contemporary full LED tail lamps are an integral part of the rear backlight graphic, making the vehicle look stronger yet harmonious. This graphic is the connection between the upper and lower rear and brings a unique presence specific to this all-new Cherokee.
The interior of the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is modern, inviting and comfortable. A sophisticated, refined design, hand-sculpted forms, signature Jeep design cues, high-quality materials, precision craftsmanship and attention-to-detail raise the bar in the mid-size SUV segment. A driver-oriented cockpit loaded with easy-to-use, useful technology, clever, thoughtful storage features and more than 70 available safety and security features including 7 standard air bags (multistage front seat air bags, side bags, window bags, driver’s side knee air bag), give the driver and passengers everything they want for any adventure they undertake.
Inspiration for the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee mid-size SUV interior included countries and terrain around the world that brought beautiful imagery to mind. The Cherokee interior is a sophisticated blend of hand-sculpted fluid shapes, high-quality materials, innovative colour and material choices, precision craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology and features that drivers and passengers appreciate.
Premium materials abound wherever the customer touches the vehicle – the door uppers and armrests, the centre armrest, the upper instrument panel. Interior trim that is soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye is found throughout the cabin. Seats in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee are ergonomically designed to support the contour of the body, are trimmed with premium cloth or quality Nappa leather and available as power adjustable, heated/ventilated seats with memory. Premium cloth fabrics include a unique interlocking graphic. The 60/40 split second-row seats adjust fore and aft for increased passenger comfort and cargo flexibility.
The class-exclusive Jeep Cargo Management System makes the most of the cargo space in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. A universal module rack is mounted on the side in the rear cargo area and provides for hooks and a removable grocery bag. Other optional accessories compatible with the system are available through Mopar® and include an off-road accessory kit for Trailhawk models that features a tow rope, gloves and more; cargo bin, cargo mat, foldable cooler and first aid/emergency kit are just some of the accessories available that mount securely to the rack for secure storage solutions the adventurous customer desires.
All-new nine-speed automatic transmission
All of the models in the new Jeep Cherokee range that will be available in the Middle East feature the 948TE nine-speed automatic gearbox, a segment first, ensuring exceptionally smooth shifts, an extremely wide gear ratio range for optimised acceleration, reduced emissions and improved fuel efficiency. The new transmission also delivers aggressive launches and smooth power delivery at highway speeds.
Two petrol engines are available on the new Jeep Cherokee in the Middle East: the 3.2-litre V6 Pentastar and the 2.4-litre MultiAir2 Tigershark.
The new 3.2-litre Pentastar V6 is the first derivative of the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 (named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines three years running), and benefits from the same innovations that earned its larger displacement predecessor industry-wide praise for its efficiency, power and refinement. This contributes to a pleasing driving experience with reduced noise, vibrations and harshness (NVH) and an outstanding balance of higher specific power output (84.2 hp per litre). The 3.2-litre Pentastar V6 engine produces 271 hp, 316 Nm of torque and delivers best-in-class V6 towing of 4,500 pounds (2,041 kg).
The 2.4-litre Tigershark is the third Chrysler Group engine to feature MultiAir technology and boasts the second-generation MultiAir2 system that further enhances combustion control, improves efficiency and reduces exhaust emissions. The 2.4-litre MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine produces 184 hp and 234 Nm of torque and offers a driving range of more than 800 km on a tank of gasoline.
The new Jeep Cherokee provides a choice of three innovative 4×4 systems:
Jeep Active Drive I features a single power transfer unit (PTU) which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation at any speed in both four-wheel and two-wheel drive mode. The system does not require any intervention or feedback from the driver, delivers necessary corrections during dynamic events and improves driver control during both understeer and oversteer conditions.
Jeep Active Drive II includes a two-speed PTU with low gears. In the 4-Low mode, the system locks the front and rear drive shafts to ensure more power at low speeds and greater towing capability. Low range provides a 2.92:1 gear reduction that enhances climbing ability and offers outstanding crawl ratios for severe off-road conditions.
The Jeep Active Drive Lock System includes all the features of Jeep Active Drive II and adds a locking rear differential to provide increased low-speed power when driving over extreme off-road trails. This system is standard only on the Trailhawk model. All 4×4 systems of the Jeep Cherokee feature the Jeep brand’s renowned Selec-Terrain traction control system with four modes (five for the Trailhawk model, which adds the Rock mode to Auto, Snow, Sport and Sand/Mud), allowing the driver to choose the on- and off-road setting best suited for optimum performance on any particular surface.
Jeep Cherokee features thoughtful, state-of-the-art, high-tech features and amenities that are intuitive, easy-to-use and provide utmost on-board comfort and infotainment.
The world-class thin-film transistor (TFT) 7 inch (177.8 mm) full-colour reconfigurable instrument cluster allows the drivers to enjoy a customised user experience and receive information and vehicle feedback in the format they prefer while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
The easy-to-use instrument cluster displays the basic information a driver needs at his or her fingertips but also allows the driver to add information they desire, similar to an iPhone. The driver can select from a multitude of information that can be displayed in the centre of the gauge cluster including turn-by-turn navigation, speed, real-time fuel economy, safety warnings, available Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, audio information and Jeep-specific features including Selec-Terrain.
The award-winning 8.4 inch (213.36 mm) touchscreen multimedia command centre – the largest in the segment – or the standard 5 inch (127 mm) touchscreen multimedia command centre are attractive, intuitive and easy-to-use, and located in the centre stack. The 2014 Cherokee equipped with the Uconnect system allows the driver to control the audio, climate, heated/ventilated seats and much more from the touchscreen, traditional controls located on the centre stack below the touchscreen or with voice activated commands. The touchscreen buttons are large and easy-to-see at a glance. The 8.4 inch (213.36 mm) colour touchscreen Uconnect system is user-friendly and includes Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, music and streaming audio capability.
Euro NCAP Five-Star Safety Rating & IIHS Top Safety Pick
The new Jeep Cherokee has been awarded the prestigious Euro NCAP five-star rating with an overall score of 83/100. This major accolade confirms the Jeep brand’s special attention to the protection of passengers and road users and underlines that the new generation Jeep Cherokee satisfies all international standards.
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety has also named the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee a 2013 Top Safety Pick – the ground-breaking SUV was one of two Chrysler Group vehicles to earn the designation during the latest round of IIHS evaluations. In the last 10 months, a total of 14 Chrysler Group vehicles have been so commended.
Top Safety Pick testing simulates a side impact with a large SUV or pickup truck, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush consistent with a rollover, and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash. In each of these, the all-new Jeep Cherokee recorded the highest-possible rating of “good” thanks to its complete offering of safety and security features, many of which – such as the Cherokee’s 65% content ratio of advanced technology steel and 7 standard airbags – help protect passengers in the event of a collision.
“The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee represents the pinnacle of innovation in the mid-size SUV segment,” said Outhwaite. “In addition to the breakthrough efficiency of its unique 4×4 system and the milestone introduction of its 9-speed automatic transmission – a world-first – the Cherokee features a host of technologies that combine to deliver outstanding occupant protection. That kind of robust performance delivers on the promise of the Jeep brand.”
The new Cherokee was engineered with a new “Compact U.S. Wide” (CUS-wide) architecture plus more than 70 available safety and security features. The Jeep Cherokee starts with a strong foundation constructed with 65% high-strength steel. Engineers then added both active and passive safety and security features, including an array of innovative systems including: Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, Forward Collision Warning-Plus, and LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus; ESC; Electronic Roll Mitigation; Blind-spot Monitoring; Rear Cross Path detection and ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines plus 7 standard air bags.
The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist feature is a first in a Chrysler Group vehicle. Using ultrasonic parking sensors on the bumper, the system will find and guide the customer into an available parking space when the driver initiates parking maneuvers. The parking guidance system controls the steering angle automatically; the driver controls the gear position, brake, and accelerator.
One of the most innovative systems fitted on the new Jeep Cherokee is the Forward Collision Warning-Plus, which detects any traffic-gap changes, and in case of a rapidly approaching obstacle in front of the vehicle activates the brakes and alerts the driver in order to have him perform the necessary corrective action.
Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus (ACC), when activated, decreases the vehicle’s pre-set cruise-control speed when closing in on another vehicle in the same lane, or when another vehicle pulls into the same lane. ACC will accelerate to the pre-set speed when the vehicle in front speeds up or moves into another lane. The system will also maintain a driver adjustable distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it and is particularly useful when driving in adverse weather conditions or in situations where there is reduced visibility.
LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus, which is offered for the first time in a Chrysler Group vehicle, uses a camera-based vision sensor to establish the Jeep Cherokee’s position on the road. If an unintentional lane drift occurs, determined by trajectory change and the absence of turn-signal activation, the system will deliver a visual warning and a haptic warning – the subtle introduction of torque from the electric power steering (EPS) system. If the driver unintentionally drifts too far, the system provides a secondary visual warning.
The Jeep Cherokee’s Blind Spot Monitoring system uses dual ultra-wideband radar sensors to aid the driver when changing lanes or if being passed by or passing unseen vehicles. The system notifies the driver of vehicle(s) in their blind spot via illuminated icons on the side-view mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime.
Finally, Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection assists drivers in parking lot situations. This system warns drivers backing out of parking spaces of traffic moving toward their vehicle, and activates every time the vehicle is in reverse. The driver is notified of vehicle(s) crossing behind the vehicle via illuminated icons on the side-view mirror and a driver-selected audible chime.
New Trail Rated Trailhawk Model
The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk model exemplifies Jeep 4×4 capability with a distinctive, aggressive look, backed up by Jeep Trail Rated hardware, for the most capable Jeep Cherokee model and the most capable mid-size SUV in the segment.
The Trailhawk includes, as standard equipment, aggressive approach and departure angles, complements of the unique front and rear fascias, one-inch (25.4 mm) factory lift, Jeep Active Drive Lock with locking rear differential, skid plates and signature red tow hooks. The locking rear differential is selectable in any low range terrain mode, but will lock automatically when in certain modes, such as “Rock,” to maximise tractive effort at the tyre patch that can support it.
The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk boasts an approach angle of 29.8 degrees, a departure angle of 32.1 degrees and breakover angle of 23.3 degrees. Running ground clearance is 8.7 inches (220.98 mm).
The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk model with the standard off-road package is Trail Rated. The “Trail Rated” badge on the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk indicates that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, manoeuverability, articulation and water fording.
The all-new Jeep Cherokee models that will be available in the Middle East are Sport (2.4-litre, 4 x 2), Longitude (2.4-litre and 3.2-litre options, 4 x 4), Limited (3.2-litre, 4 x 4) and Trailhawk (3.2-litre, 4 x 4 with rear differential lock).
